Sensors and Biosensors

The Biomedical Electronics Groups are interested in a wide variety of sensors, from environmental sensors, through to biosensors and contact sensing of the body. Researchers are examining the use of innovative and current sensing methods for a range of different medical and biological application and research focuses on the extension of techniques of design, materials science and signal processing to more multidsciplinary areas. Sensors research in the group focuses on applying expertise at using the advantages of electronics and/or optics (high speed, micro/nanoscale fabrication, advanced signal processing, etc) to novel applications and the development of new systems.

  • Electrical and Impedance sensing is a core focus for the group, with a range of platforms, techniques and applications being explored. Specialisms exist in the development of impedance sensing of single, individual biological organisms such as cells as bacteria, as well as electrical sensors for measurement of impulses
  • Chemical sensors, potentiometric and amperometric, along with optical sensing are being investigated for medical diagnostics, Point of Care testing and environmental monitoring. The group is looking at aqueous sensors capable of sensitive measurement of chemical reactions and small concentrations.
  • Novel application of electronics in the development of Field-Effect Transistor-sensors are being examined for low-cost biosensing and rapid detection, with potentiometric or amperometric sensors capable of measuring binding reactions, for biosensing. Biosensors combine the advantages of cutting edge high sensitivity sensors with the unique recognition properties of biomolecules, which can bind to specific molecules even in a environment full of other material.
